When the announcement of Joe Arpaio being granted a presidential pardon came out, people all over the country were left wondering if their ten-year long fight against the man who had caused distress to so many years would ever come to an end.
Just last year, the Arizona district judge sentenced Arpaio for the crimes of racism that he had committed. However, with Donald Trump offering Arpaio the pardon, all of the crimes that he committed will be let go off, and he won’t be held for any of his wrongdoings.
Arpaio was known for being someone who openly opposed to people belonging to the Latin American community. He had incredibly strong views relating to migrants, even if they had been living in the country legally. He was known for falsely imprisoning people who belonged to this minority group, and regularly inflicted various kinds of injustices on them. Another crime that Arpaio was known for committing was bribing members of the jury who were presiding over cases in which he had conducted the arrest.
He would do so to get the defendant convicted, and also sometimes, longer sentences as compared to what they would usually get. He was also known for the harsh conditions that he kept the prisons that he ran in. A lot of the times, prisoners were subject to torture, and not given necessities like food and water through the course of the day.
The media soon started shedding light on these injustices that were being inflicted because of the accounts that people started giving in public about their time.
Lacey and Larkin were two people who saw it as their duty to inform the people about the conditions that these people were being made to live in, and the injustices at the hands of a sheriff who was entrusted with a job to keep them safe.
Lacey and Larkin decided to publish an article about this in the newspaper that they ran, shortly after which they were arrested and taken from their homes in the middle of the night. They were confined for a total of two days before they were released. They then decided to sue Arpaio with the view of bringing justice to him, and for all the people that he has inflicted this kind of injustice to in their lives.
After a long drawn out battle, Lacey and Larkin decided to take action against Arpaio for his wrongdoings and the trouble that he had caused them as a result of the arrests. They were given a huge settlement by Maricopa County, which was then used to start up the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund.
Since the organization first came into existence, one of their main aims was to make Arpaio pay for all the crimes that he had committed.
It was evident that they could not seek much federal help because of his influence on the Republican Party, but believed that they had the power to bring as much attention to his crimes as possible so that the judicial system will take note and take action against him.
