On Sunday, the 8th of March, 2026, in Birmingham, the long-time approach of a patient and persistent nation finally bore fruit.
A quiet but steady system of development produced results in the form of Lin Chun-Yi and the dynamic duo of Ye Wong Hei and Nicole Gonzales Chan.
Chinese Taipei walked away with an unexpected double. Lin Chun-Yi beat India’s Lakshya Sen 21-15, 22-20 in an evenly contested final. The 57-minute clash saw Lin control the rhythm throughout the two sets.
Earlier in the day, another Chinese Taipei pair completed the memorable run. Ye Hong-wei and Nicole Gonzales Chan won the mixed doubles title with a comprehensive 21–19, 21–18 victory over the French duo of Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue.
“It’s true I was very tired, but there was one point that actually he played it out, and I played it back. I was very annoyed with myself because that point would have finished the match,” he said.
Analysts were quick to point out Chinese Taipei’s long-standing strategy of sending players to compete in tournaments across all levels.
“Normally, I would really care about that mistake and let it get to me. But today I was like, “Okay, two more points, calm down, and just focus on the next point. He said,
“Winning the All England is a dream come true. I remember during COVID‑19 times, watching my teammates play in this tournament; I was very excited. And from watching it on TV to now being able to play and win, it is unbelievable.”
The aim has been simple: to give athletes more exposure to different playstyles, more matches, and more experience in playing under pressure.
The approach is quite the opposite of some of the traditional powerhouses of badminton. Most strong countries limit how many tournaments their top players participate in in order to manage workload and exhaustion.
Chinese Taipei’s developmental strategy focuses heavily on competitiveness.
Young players often travel across the world, playing and gaining experience from smaller events before stepping onto the bigger stages as a proper challenge.
That method has begun producing results. Lin’s victory was particularly historic, as he became the first Taiwanese player to win the men’s singles title at the All England Championships.
Now they have joined Tai Tzu Ying as the only All England champions from Chinese Taipei.
