MOROCCO OR SPAIN? LAMINE YAMAL ENDS ALL SPECULATION

Lamine Yamal may play for Spain today, but he could just as easily have represented Morocco. The Barcelona sensation has finally explained why he chose La Roja over the Atlas Lions.

Speaking on 60 Minutes Overtime, the 18-year-old winger — brilliant again this weekend against Alavés (3–1) — gave a straightforward answer. “Deep down, I had thought about Morocco, but I always wanted to play the Euros,” Yamal admitted. Born in Spain but proudly connected to his Moroccan roots, he says he made his decision “out of conviction.”

His message puts an end to years of speculation. Despite strong efforts from the Moroccan federation, Yamal ultimately followed his instinct and committed his international future to Spain.

“I would have loved to play for Morocco”

He even confessed he once dreamed of representing Morocco — especially in 2022, when the Atlas Lions reached the World Cup semifinals. “I felt something strange, because deep down I told myself I would have loved to play for Morocco,” he said.

But the choice was made: “Spain also brings me closer to the World Cup and my chances of winning it… I will always have love for Morocco, because it is also my country. There would have been nothing wrong in playing for them. But I grew up in Spain, and I consider it my country too.”
