Wolves defender Max Kilman has headed for a medical with West Ham as they close on agreement for his £40million transfer.

Mail Sport revealed last month how West Ham had targeted the 27-year-old who had been a key performer for coach Julen Lopetegui who made him captain during their previous time working together at Wolves.

West Ham had a bid of £25million early in the window rejected and have discussed a couple of options, making offers for the likes of Nice centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo but Kilman, who was also a target for previous boss David Moyes, has remained their priority.

Newcastle also made an approach for Kilman but West Ham have pushed hard to deliver a centre-back that Lopetegui knows well and has Premier League experience.

Kilman's former club Maidenhead are also due to receive around £4million after inserting a sell-on clause in his transfer to Wolves. That was initially 20per cent but it has been negotiated down to help facilitate the move to West Ham.

Napoli had a £30m bid for Kilman rejected last year.

Kilman has been at Wolves since 2018 and has made over 150 appearances for the club.

West Ham have already been active in this transfer window, securing the signing of Luis Guilherme from Palmeiras for £19.2million. The 18-year-old is capable of playing as a winger or an attacking midfielder.

The Hammers have also signed goalkeeper Wes Foderingham on a free transfer.
