TIGER WOODS’ SON ATTEMPTING TO QUALIFY FOR U.S. OPEN
Charlie Woods is one step closer to potentially playing in a professional golf tournament with his father.
Woods, the 15-year-old son of Tiger Woods, is attempting to qualify for this year’s U.S. Open. According to Tod Leonard of Golf Digest, Charlie is on the tee sheet for Thursday’s first stage of the Florida Golf Association’s 18-hole local qualifying event in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
The younger Woods is part of an 84-player field at the Legacy Golf & Tennis Club. Five golfers are expected to advance to the 36-hole final qualifying event for an opportunity to be able to play in the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina in June.
Tiger Woods is not yet listed as part of the field for the U.S. Open, but the 48-year-old is expected to receive a special exemption from the USGA.
Charlie tried to qualify for the PGA Tour’s Cognizant Classic earlier this year, but he shot a 16-over par 86 in the qualifying event.
Tiger and Charlie have played in several events together that have drawn a significant amount of media coverage. The younger Woods has looked exactly like his father at times on the course. If both ever played in a tournament together, the hype surrounding the event would be unprecedented.
