PATRIOTS ANNOUNCE RELEASE OF AN OFFENSIVE LINEMAN, PRACTICE SQUAD SIGNING
The New England Patriots have been making a number of roster moves over recent days, as they trimmed their roster down to 53 players, claimed a quartet of guys off waivers and have started to fill out their practice squad.
After New England's signing of second-year cornerback Isaiah Bolden was reported Friday morning, the team confirmed that and also announced that they've signed linebacker Ochaun Mathis and released offensive tackle Calvin Anderson from injured reserve with a settlement.
Mathis, 25, played collegiately at TCU (where he earned Second-team All-Big 12 honors twice) and Nebraska before the Los Angeles Rams selected him in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL draft. He appeared in eight games as a rookie, recording two tackles and a quarterback hit, and he was waived during roster cuts earlier in the week.
Anderson, 28, played for both Rice and Texas in college before the Patriots signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2019. He was released just weeks after the draft, and, after a brief stint with the New York Jets, he joined the Denver Broncos.
He appeared in 41 games (starting 12) for Denver over three seasons and then re-signed with New England in 2023. After battling malaria, he appeared in five total games and started two.
Anderson was expected to compete for the starting tackle job this offseason, but he was placed on injured reserve during the cutdown. He'll now be free to sign with any team, including the Patriots (after an agreed-upon amount of time).
