SEAN PAYTON EXPLAINS WHY BRONCOS DIDN'T TRADE BACK, RAIDERS FACTORED IN

Bo Nix is the new quarterback of the Denver Broncos so for Sean Payton and those fans who were eager to get that out of the way early, mission accomplished. However, that move comes with a cost.

The Broncos don't pick again until No. 76 (barring a trade) and will have to wait as many great prospects are chosen in the process. The team has several roster holes that go well beyond the quarterback spot, which is why the idea of moving back to acquire more draft capital, particularly in the form of a second-round pick, looked so good.

Sean Payton was not willing to risk losing out on Bo Nix

Payton likely expected the question of why the team chose against that to come quickly, and it did. Here was what he had to say:

It seems that Payton was severely locked in on choosing Nix, for all of the reasons he mentioned following the pick. It's interesting to note that the team was worried about the Las Vegas Raiders taking Nix, which was probably the initial reaction from much of Broncos Country.

The Raiders did sign Gardner Minshew as a free agent this offseason but there is no long-term answer at quarterback on that roster, so it was certainly possible that the Raiders would grab him. With that being a worry, it makes sense to snag him while you can.

What it did lead to was the Raiders getting Brock Bowers, arguably a much better prospect than Nix, so the Broncos will have to hope that's not something that comes back to haunt them.
