SCARLETT MEW JENSEN ADMITS SHE'S 'LOST FOR WORDS' AFTER SYNCHRONISED DIVING MEDAL WITH YASMIN HARPER... AS SHE DIDN'T THINK SHE WOULD MAKE THE PARIS OLYMPICS A MONTH AGO BECAUSE OF A 'BACK FRACTURE'

  • Duo secured bronze in women's 3m synchronised diving with a score of 302.28
  • Pair relied on an Australian blunder leaving them just short of the required total
  • Jensen and Harper became first British women diving medalists since 1960

Scarlett Mew Jensen has admitted she is 'lost for words' after securing synchronised diving bronze with partner Yasmin Harper, making the pair Team GB's first medalists of the Paris Olympics.

The diver described her monumental comeback from a 'back fracture' and added she didn't think she would make the Paris Olympics a month ago.

The duo sensationally secured bronze in the women's 3m synchronised diving today with a score of 302.28 after a disastrous error from the Australian pair.

It looked as if Team GB had lost out going into the final round but a slip from Annabelle Smith saw the Australians score just 48.60 and fall short of the 58.68 they needed to overtake the Brits.

And the teammates described the 'incredible' feeling of winning an Olympic medal and becoming the first British women to achieve the feat since 1960, in an interview with the BBC

Harper said: 'That's what we think about because it has been a bit of a thing that the girls haven't had a medal in so many years so coming into today we really wanted to put our best foot forward and show what we could do so to come away with the first medal in so long in the women's diving is incredible, the perfect birthday present for tomorrow.'

On their reaction to the Australian blunder on the final dive, she said: 'We knew that they had to falter a bit to feel the pressure on that dive and it meant that we came away with a bronze medal so we couldn't be more pleased.'

Jensen added that they were in 'denial' after the dramatic end to the contest.

She said: 'We thought they would have done it regardless but also just suspense massively.'

This was also the first time since 2004 that Team GB picked up a medal on the first day after the opening ceremony.

A tricky third round had seen the duo plummet down the scoreboard into sixth after scoring 63.90, but they quickly improved with the following dive, scoring 71.10 to claw their way back into fourth.

China's Yani Chang and Yiwen Chen eased to gold with a consistent performance that saw them finish first across the five rounds, while USA pair Sarah Bacon and Kassidy Cook claimed silver.

Nicknamed ‘Scar’, Scarlett, 22, from London, who began diving aged eight, was one of the youngest British athletes at Tokyo.

Last year she teamed up with Harper, 23, from Sheffield.

Together they won the silver and bronze medals at the 2023 and 2024 World Championships respectively.

Meanwhile, Tom Daley was spotted knitting this morning as he watched his fellow divers, just two days before he begins his campaign for Olympic gold.

The Team GB star took some time to unwind ahead of his curtain-raiser in the 10m synchronised diving with partner Noah Williams on Monday.

The 30-year-old looked proud of his work as he showed off the woolly jumper with the name 'Daley' knitted onto the back.
